A rather dominant heresy is the idea that the Great Tribulation would be preceded by the Rapture of "saints". There is NOTHING in the bible that says that. Rather that in the middle, when the Beast starts handing out marks, the saints would flee into the "wilderness" and wait out the Wrath of God. The verse you quote says that if the tribulation kept on going, everybody would get killed !

While there will be saints on the Earth during the Tribulaton, in Matthew 24 Jesus is speaking to the JEWS. In verse 16 he even makes the distinction.
~ then let those who are in JUDEA flee into the mountains.
Here's more detailed description. Israel is often referred to as "The Woman" in prophecy. Revelation chapter 12 explains this in detail. The part that is particularly interesting is verse 5 were it says..
~ She bore a Child who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron. And her Child was caught up to God and his throne
Now when you get to verse 13 it says....
~ Now when the dragon saw that he had been cast to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male Child
But the woman was given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness to her place, where she is nourished for a time, times, and half a time, from the presence of the serpent.
So the fleeing into the wilderness is about the Jews. The 144,000 of the 12 tribes or 12,000 each explained in Revelation chapter 7, not the tribulation saints. Not to say there won't be some in that group straggling along, just saying that this particular thing you brought up is about Israel.
As far as when the Resurrection of the Saints takes place, all I can say is that in Revelation chapter 3 verse 10 in the letters to the seven churches Jesus himself says....
~ Because you have kept my command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
Not only that, but the Tribulation period is about God pouring his wrath upon the world. Jesus Christ took all of God's wrath for US on the cross. Not just wrath in Hell, but all wrath period. When he said, "It is finished" he meant it. For anyone whom is a Born-again believer in Jesus Christ all sin have been forgiven, and the sin debt has been paid IN FULL.
1 Thessalonians 5:9 - 11 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him. Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
Then you have Luke chapter 21 verses 34-36 which say...
But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighted down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth. Watch therefore and pray always that you may be counted worthy to ESCAPE all these things that WILL come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.
That standing before the Son of Man is the Judgment Seat Of Christ. We have to be judged to give an account to the Lord Jesus Christ for what we have done as Christians. Rewards will be given out, and probably some choice words from the Lord on some of us for not working as hard for the Kingdom as we should.
There is a lot more but I'd be typing all night. I believe the World of God through and through and everything that I have read points to the Church being caught up before the Tribulation starts.
